Michael I. Jordan Joins Rearden Commerce Technical Advisory Board

Renowned researcher in machine learning and artificial intelligence to advise company on the relevance engine that drives Deem, the smart commerce platform

Rearden Commerce, creator of Deem™, today announced the appointment of Michael I. Jordan to the company’s Technical Advisory Board. Prof. Jordan, a leading researcher in machine learning and artificial intelligence, will serve as advisor to the company’s relevance team, guiding the expanding application of machine learning on Rearden’s Deem platform.

Prof. Jordan is the Pehong Chen Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Berkeley — in the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Statistics. He was a professor at MIT from 1988 to 1998. His research in recent years has focused on Bayesian nonparametric analysis, probabilistic graphical models, spectral methods, variational methods, kernel machines and applications to problems in statistical genetics, signal processing, computational biology, information retrieval and natural language processing.

“I have long admired Michael’s research, and am eager to work with him to apply machine learning to Deem,” said Dan Pritchett, Chief Technology Officer, Rearden Commerce. “With Michael’s guidance, Deem will provide users with increasingly relevant and personalized search results — driven by the intersection of traditional analytics, semantic analysis, and machine learning applied to big data.”

Prof. Jordan is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been named a Neyman Lecturer and a Medallion Lecturer by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He is a Fellow of the ACM, the IMS, the IEEE, the AAAI and the ASA. He received his Masters in Mathematics from Arizona State University, and earned his PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of California, San Diego.

“I am impressed with the ways in which Rearden Commerce has applied machine learning and semantic technology to its Deem platform,” said Prof. Jordan. “Deem already recognizes complex patterns and can make intelligent decisions for distinct users. Now we take this a step further — strengthening Deem’s ability to truly know its individual users and help them find exactly what they are looking for on the web.” Prof. Jordan joins a renowned group of Technical Advisors for Rearden Commerce: Marty Abbott (former eBay CTO), Adam Bosworth (former VP, Engineering at Google), Tom Keevan (former head of eBay’s global technical operations), Chuck Geiger (former CTO of PayPal), Jon Bosack (called the “Father of XML” at Sun Microsystems), Dr. Robert J. Glushko (scientist, entrepreneur and author), John Seely Brown (author and Co-Chairman of the Deloitte Center for Edge Innovation), and Philip W. Steitz (former Technology Officer at Barclaycard).
